What to Expect on Your Auschwitz-Birkenau Guided Tour
This full-day excursion from Kraków takes you through both parts of the former camp with a licensed guide who helps you understand what happened there and why it still matters. Everything is arranged for you, from transport and entry to the headsets that let you hear your guide clearly, so you can give the visit your full attention.
How Your Day Works
- Meet in central Kraków. Your tour leaves from one of three meeting points at the time shown in your booking confirmation.
- Drive to Oświęcim. About 1.5 hours in an air-conditioned vehicle.
- Auschwitz I. After the security check, your guide leads you through the main gate, the original brick blocks and the exhibitions inside them.
- Auschwitz II-Birkenau. You continue to Birkenau, about 3 km away, to see the railway ramp, the barracks and the ruins of the gas chambers and crematoria.
- Back to Kraków. Another 1.5 hours, arriving back around 7 hours after you set off.

What documents do I need for Auschwitz?
Give the full names of all participants when you book, and bring a passport or ID card on the day, as it's checked at the entrance. Everyone goes through an airport-style security check, and bags are limited to 30 × 20 × 10 cm, so leave larger bags at your accommodation.
What should I wear and bring?
Dress respectfully and for the weather: up to 70% of the visit is outdoors, especially at Birkenau, and there's little shelter. Wear comfortable shoes, and bring water and a snack, as there's no time for a proper meal between the two sites. Eating, smoking and loud behaviour aren't allowed on the grounds. Photos are allowed in most places, but not with flash inside the buildings.
Is the Auschwitz tour suitable for children?
Children must be accompanied by an adult, and infant seats are available for the journey. Because the visit can be deeply upsetting, we recommend it for visitors aged 13 and over.
Is the tour wheelchair accessible?
Unfortunately not. The tour isn't suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, as the route covers long distances on uneven ground and includes buildings with stairs.
Should I book my Auschwitz tour in advance or in Kraków?
Book in advance if you can. Entry tickets are released online only and tours fill up, especially from spring to autumn. If your plans are last-minute, you can still book here right up to the day, as long as places remain.
Can I visit Auschwitz from Kraków without a tour?
Yes. You can buy your own entry ticket online and travel by bus, train or private transfer. A guided tour saves you finding a ticket and planning transport, and a licensed guide gives the context that makes the visit meaningful.
