- Start in Kraków or at the mine. Choose pickup from your hotel, one of three central meeting points, or meet your guide directly at the mine entrance if you have your own transport.
- A short drive south-east. The ride from central Kraków to Wieliczka takes around 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
- Down the wooden staircase. The visit begins with a descent of roughly 380 steps to the first level, 64 metres below ground.
- Along the Tourist Route. Your guide leads you through about 3.5 km of chambers, galleries and chapels, telling the story of the miners who worked here for centuries. This part lasts 2 to 3 hours.
- Up by lift and back to town. The route ends 135 metres down, where a lift takes you back to the surface. Guests with transport are then driven back to where their day began.
What You'll See Underground
- St Kinga's Chapel. Often called the salt cathedral, this vast chapel more than 100 metres down is carved entirely from rock salt, including its floor, altars and chandeliers.
- Brine lakes. Still, green-tinted underground pools lit from below, in chambers that once held working machinery.
- Salt sculptures. Figures and reliefs cut by generations of miners, among them a statue of Nicolaus Copernicus.
- Historic mining equipment. Original timber supports, winches and tools that show how salt was cut and hauled to the surface.

How many steps are there in the salt mine?
Around 380 steps take you down to the first level at the start, and the whole route has more than 800, most of them going downhill. Comfortable, non-slip shoes make a big difference.
Is there a lift in the Krakow salt mine?
Yes, but only on the way out. Visitors walk down the stairs at the beginning, and a lift brings everyone back up to the surface from the deepest point of the route at the end.

The Tourist Route runs between 64 and 135 metres below ground. The mine itself extends much deeper, but those lower levels are not part of the visit.

The temperature underground stays at about 17–18°C all year round. A light jacket or jumper is enough in summer and winter alike, together with shoes you can walk in for a couple of hours.

Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult, and infant seats are available in the vehicle on request. Keep in mind that the route involves a lot of walking and stairs, which younger children may find tiring.
Is the tour accessible for wheelchairs or people with claustrophobia?
